Is Open Shelving Out of Style? A 2026 Bathroom Guide

Introduction

No, open shelving is not out of style in 2026. It remains a popular choice in bathrooms because it keeps a room feeling open and airy, puts everyday items within reach, and suits the minimalist direction that continues to shape modern interiors. It isn't the right fit for every household, but as a design approach it's still current.

This guide explains why open shelving still works, how it compares to closed cabinetry, when to choose one over the other, and how to style open shelves so they look tidy rather than cluttered.

Is Open Shelving Still in Style?

Open shelving is still in style in 2026, and its appeal comes from function as much as looks. Open shelves make a bathroom feel larger and less closed-off, which is why they pair naturally with minimalist and contemporary design, two directions that have held steady rather than faded.

The reason it endures is practical. Open shelves keep towels, baskets, and daily items in reach without doors or drawers to open, and they use less material than full cabinetry, which often makes them more budget-friendly. The trend has matured from a bold statement into a standard option, which is a sign of staying power, not decline.

Open Shelving vs. Closed Cabinetry: Which Is Right for You?

Open shelving and closed cabinetry solve different problems, so the right choice depends on how you use your bathroom rather than which looks better. Open shelving prioritizes access and openness; closed cabinetry prioritizes concealment and storage volume.

Choose open shelving if you like a lighter, more open room, keep your items tidy, and want easy access to towels and everyday essentials. Choose closed storage if you need to conceal clutter, share the bathroom with a busy household, or want maximum enclosed storage.

Many bathrooms use both, pairing an open-shelf vanity with a closed cabinet elsewhere in the room.

How to Design with Open Shelving Vanities

1/ Choosing the right materials

Material choice can significantly affect both the look and longevity of your shelving.

• Consider wood options like a solid wood frame paired with plywood panels. These materials are sturdy and offer a timeless aesthetic.

• For those wanting a more luxurious touch, stone countertops such as Carrara White Marble, Pure White Quartz, or Carrara White Quartz are excellent choices.

2/ Balancing aesthetics and functionality

Creating a beautiful yet functional space requires consideration of various visual and structural aspects.

• Choose color schemes that can complement your existing bathroom decor. This could mean coordinating with your wall paint, tiles, or even your towels.

• Determine the right shelf height and spacing to ensure you can easily store and access all necessary items.

• Complement your bathroom vanity with a mirror that can enhance the display and add to the room's overall openness.

3/ Other considerations

Before diving into your open shelving project, it’s important to weigh the pros and cons.

• While open shelving offers a modern, airy feel, it does require more frequent cleaning to avoid dust buildup.

• Budgeting for quality materials will ensure your shelves are both durable and stylish, hence saving you money in the long run

ARIEL Open-Shelf Vanities: Bayhill and Magnolia Collections

ARIEL's open-shelf vanities come in two collections, Bayhill and Magnolia, both built around an open lower shelf for a light, accessible look. You can see the full range on our open-shelf vanity collection.

Build and finish

Each cabinet is handcrafted from solid wood and plywood, then finished with Sherwin-Williams polyurethane (PU) paint. The PU paint creates a hard, durable surface that stands up to daily wear, which matters in a bathroom where surfaces are used and wiped down constantly.

Countertops

Both collections pair with light stone countertops that suit an open, airy look:

• Carrara White Marble for soft, natural veining

• Pure White Quartz for a clean, uniform white

• Carrara White Quartz for marble-look veining with the durability of quartz

Sinks, sizes, and hardware

All ARIEL sinks are undermount, so the choices are the sink shape and offset. Both use a rectangular sink or an oval sink, and both can be set left, right, or center depending on your layout.

Single-sink vanities run from 30 to 66 inches and double-sink vanities from 60 to 72 inches, so most bathrooms are covered. Hardware is customizable in matte black, satin brass, brushed nickel, and polished chrome, which lets you set the contrast against the vanity color.

How to Style Open Shelves in a Bathroom

The key to styling open shelves is restraint: a few well-chosen items look intentional, while too many look cluttered. Because everything is visible, the presentation does the work that cabinet doors would otherwise hide.

1/ Display towels

Towels are a bathroom essential that double as decor. Coordinate towel colors with your bathroom palette for a cohesive look, and keep everyday towels within easy reach while storing guest towels separately. Folded towels read as clean and organized; rolled towels read as more relaxed. Choose whichever suits the room.

2/ Add a few decorative items

A small number of decorative pieces keeps the space feeling personal without crowding it. A potted plant, a simple jar, or a small tray adds life, and swapping in a seasonal item now and then keeps the shelf feeling fresh. Aim for a few pieces with breathing room between them rather than a full shelf.

3/ Use baskets to organize

Baskets are the simplest way to keep open shelves tidy. Wicker, wire, or fabric baskets corral smaller items like toiletries so they're easy to find while keeping the shelf looking neat. They're the main reason an open shelf can stay uncluttered day to day.

Keeping Open Shelves Looking Good

Open shelves take a little more routine cleaning than closed cabinets because their contents and surfaces are exposed. To keep an open-shelf vanity looking its best, wipe surfaces with a soft damp cloth to remove dirt and dust, then follow with a dry cloth. Do not use abrasives or harsh cleaners, which can damage the finish.

Since dust settles on open surfaces faster than inside a closed cabinet, a quick wipe-down as part of your normal cleaning routine is usually all it takes. Keeping items in baskets also cuts down on how much you need to move and clean around.

Conclusion

Open shelving isn't out of style in 2026. It stays popular because it keeps bathrooms feeling open, puts daily items in reach, and often costs less than full cabinetry. It works best when you like a lighter look and keep your shelves tidy, and a closed cabinet is the better call when you need to hide clutter or maximize storage.

If an open-shelf vanity fits how you use your bathroom, ARIEL Bayhill and Magnolia collections are a good place to start.
